This painting depicts the Giant Kelp – Macrocystis pyrifera, which forms the magnificent kelp forests which once flourished around Tasmania’s coastline. It grows up to 40m in height. The golden fronds catch the sunshine and sway with the currents, a truly wonderful sight.

Sadly these forests have slowly disappeared, with now only 5% remaining. But fortunately small patches can still be found, and The Giant Kelp Restoration Project is working to restore some of these important ecosystems.
